I will be showing some new pieces at Spey Bank Studio, Grantown on Spey from this Friday until the 3rd of August.
My approach to two new works ‘Cold Mountain’ and ‘Mountain Wood’ has, out of need to meet the deadline for the show, been to make my images with a more formal approach. I have been experimenting more with brush painting these past few years, as you may have noticed, due to time constraints from work and family time! It’s all a bit of a rush and my more organic method of looking into patterns to find complex layered landscapes can be a slow process these days.
The two new works were aiming for simplicity, Cold Mountain explored romantic sensibilities, specifically Harald Sohlberg’s work which I saw in Oslo in 2017. His night series was relevant to the night sky works I had been making. Mountain Wood was looking towards Hokusai’s Fuji and my ‘Snow Covered Path’ from last year, which was looking at Peter Doig’s snow pieces specifically, I was a gallery attendant for his show at the Scottish National Gallery in 2013 and spent many hours enjoying and contemplating his work, my appreciation of his work has grown with time too I will add.
